Navigating the Ethical Dimensions of AI in Academic Education

What is it about?

EmpowerAI is an Erasmus+ funded project aiming at integrating ethical AI practices in higher education. With the growing presence of AI in everyday life, this project addresses the urgent need to equip academic staff and students with the knowledge and skills to adopt AI responsibly and ethically.

What is the goal?

The main goal of the EmpowerAI project is to foster responsible AI adoption in academia by providing ethical guidelines, tools, and educational practices. The key objectives include:
🔹 Developing ethical guidelines for the use of AI in university classrooms.
🔹 Empowering academic staff with AI-driven teaching methods.
🔹 Enhancing student awareness of the ethical implications of AI in their academic and professional lives.

What are we going to do?

The project will implement a series of activities to achieve its goals:
🔹Ethical Guidelines Development – A set of comprehensive guidelines will be created to assist educators in integrating AI ethically into their teaching methods.
🔹Seminar Series – Academic staff will participate in seminars designed to improve their understanding of AI technology and its impact on education.
🔹Digital Learning Solutions – A custom-built digital platform will offer self-paced courses on ethical AI use, and a chatbot will be designed to provide real-time academic integrity support.
🔹Micro-Credentials for Students – A specialized micro-credential program will be created to help students navigate AI-related challenges and enhance their technological and ethical understanding.

What do we want to achieve?

By the end of the project, EmpowerAI aims to:
🔹Train educators on AI and ethics in academia.
🔹Enhance AI literacy and ethical understanding of university students.
🔹Build a digital learning platform and chatbot to support both educators and students in adopting responsible AI practices. 🔹Engage stakeholders and raise awareness among members of the general public on the ethical use of AI in education.

Objectives

EmpowerAI aligns with the European Union’s priorities by fostering innovative learning and teaching practices while ensuring excellence in education, skills development, and ethical AI integration in academic settings. The project establishes a structured approach to addressing the transformative role of LLM chatbots in education, emphasizing responsible and ethical adoption of AI technologies.

Development of Ethical Guidelines

A framework will be established to support the ethical use of LLM chatbots within European academia. Through collaboration with academic staff and stakeholders, comprehensive guidelines will be developed to integrate Generative AI and ethical considerations into curricula and educational methodologies.

Empowering Academic Staff

A seminar series will be introduced to enhance teaching practices and promote ethical AI use. This structured program, consisting of three modules, will equip faculty members with knowledge on AI technology and its implications in academia, ensuring effective and responsible integration into educational settings.

Integration of Innovative Pedagogical Approaches

A digital learning platform will be introduced, enabling faculty members to adopt AI-enhanced teaching methods and provide students with ethical guidance. A chatbot, developed within a structured ethical framework, will further support both faculty and students by facilitating informed decision-making in academic integrity and AI literacy.

Advancing AI and Ethics Skills for Students

A micro-credential program will be implemented, equipping students with AI and ethical competencies essential for academic, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits. By engaging in multidisciplinary learning, students will develop the critical skills needed to navigate AI applications responsibly in education, innovation, and industry.
