📅 Dates: Saturday, December 14 (2:30–3:30 PM) & Sunday, December 15 (11:30 AM–12:30 PM)
📍 Location: University of Patras
👥 Participants: 28 (internal and external participants)
As part of the EmpowerAI project, the University of Patras organized a two-day focus group discussion to examine the impact of AI in education, research, and technology use. Faculty members, researchers, and external experts engaged in a critical dialogue addressing both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in higher education.
Key Discussion Themes & Insights
🔹 Academic Integrity & AI
Participants examined AI's impact on academic honesty, discussing the risks of automated content generation, plagiarism detection, and AI-assisted assessments. Faculty members emphasized the need for clear policies and ethical guidelines to ensure students uphold academic integrity.
🔹 Critical Thinking & Personal Responsibility
The discussion highlighted AI's role in shaping student learning behaviors. While AI can enhance problem-solving skills, participants agreed that students must be guided to use AI as a tool for critical thinking rather than as a substitute for independent reasoning.
🔹 Use of Technology & Student Independence
AI-powered tools have the potential to personalize learning experiences, but concerns were raised regarding students' over-reliance on AI for assignments and decision-making. Educators stressed the importance of teaching students how to critically engage with AI-generated content.
🔹 Authenticity of Assessments & Intellectual Property
Professors voiced concerns about AI-generated assignments, questioning whether current assessment methods remain valid in the age of AI. Discussions also covered intellectual property rights, with participants stressing the need for clear policies on AI-generated work and academic ownership.
🔹 Quality of the Learning Process
AI’s ability to enhance learning materials and adapt to student needs was widely acknowledged. However, the group debated how universities can maintain high educational standards while integrating AI, ensuring that it serves as an enhancement rather than a replacement for traditional teaching methodologies.
🔹 Ethics in Research & Data Privacy
AI’s role in academic research and data-driven decision-making was another focal point. Concerns were raised regarding bias in AI models, ethical use of AI in research, and data protection. The discussion underscored the need for strict privacy measures and institutional frameworks to address AI’s ethical implications.
🔹 Access to Technology & Equity in AI Adoption
Ensuring equal access to AI tools was a major concern, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Participants stressed that universities must promote AI literacy and ensure inclusivity, preventing AI from deepening educational inequalities.
Conclusions & Next Steps
The focus group provided valuable insights into the evolving role of AI in higher education and research. Participants emphasized the importance of balancing AI innovation with ethical considerations to ensure academic integrity, data privacy, and equitable access to technology.
The findings from this discussion will help EmpowerAI refine its initiatives, focusing on AI literacy programs, ethical guidelines, and institutional policies that empower educators and students alike.
